When a child gets stuck, help them name the problem, choose one small next move, and try it themselves. A useful breakfast-table script is: “Show me where it stopped making sense. What could you try next? I’ll stay with you while you test it.”
In April 1970, the Apollo 13 crew faced rising carbon dioxide inside the spacecraft. The command module’s square filters could not fit the lunar module’s round openings. NASA engineers in Houston had to devise a procedure using materials already available aboard the spacecraft, then guide Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert, and Fred Haise through the construction from the ground.
The engineers could explain. They could break the task into manageable actions. They could check what happened next. They could not reach into the spacecraft and build the adapter themselves.
The improvised filter worked. The episode is documented in Jim Lovell and Jeffrey Kluger’s book Lost Moon, later published as Apollo 13, and in NASA’s Apollo history.
The stakes at your breakfast table are smaller, thankfully. The useful principle is the same: good help gives a child enough structure to make the next move while leaving that move in the child’s hands.
Start by locating the snag
A child says, “I can’t do it.”
The fastest adult response is often an explanation. We see the missing step, supply it, and get everyone closer to shoes, bags, and the front door. The page gets finished. The child’s problem-solving turn disappears.
Try this instead:
“Show me the part that feels stuck.”
That sentence asks for evidence without demanding a polished explanation. A younger child might point. An older child might say, “I don’t know what this word means,” or “I can’t make these fractions match.”
If they still cannot locate the snag, narrow the view:
“What part do you understand?”
“Where did it change from easy to hard?”
“Can you show me the last step that worked?”
These prompts reduce the size of the problem. They also tell the child that being stuck has a location. It is something to investigate, rather than proof that they are bad at reading, mathematics, or logic.
Give a prompt, then return the controls
Once you know where the difficulty begins, offer the smallest useful prompt.
For a counting challenge, you might say, “Could you touch each object once as you count?”
For an unfamiliar word: “What sound does the first letter make?”
For a logic puzzle: “What does the train do after this instruction?”
Then stop.
That pause can feel surprisingly long. Adults often fill it because silence looks like continued struggle. Yet the pause is where the child retrieves a fact, tests an idea, or notices something new.
A compact script helps:
“I notice…”
“I wonder…”
“What will you try?”
For example: “I notice both sides have pieces of different sizes. I wonder how we could make them easier to compare. What will you try?”
The adult contributes attention and a useful boundary. The child chooses the action.
If the attempt fails, keep ownership in the same place:
“What did that change?”
“What do you know now?”
“Would you change one step or try a different plan?”
This is especially useful in a study-game such as Jambolino, where operating the machine, routing the train, building the circuit, or decoding the word carries the learning. Taking over the interaction may complete the visible challenge while removing the thinking that gives the challenge value.
Match help to the size of the struggle
Support should change when repeated attempts produce no new information. Endless questioning can feel like an oral exam, particularly for a tired child holding a spoon at 7:35 in the morning.
After two or three unproductive tries, make the next step smaller:
“Let’s choose between these two ideas.”
“I’ll do the first example. You do the next one.”
“Tell me what to move, and I’ll be your hands.”
That last option can help when frustration or fine-motor effort has become the obstacle. The child still directs the reasoning.

Close with evidence, not a verdict
When the child gets through the challenge, praise the move you observed:
“You went back to the last part that worked.”
“You tried one instruction, watched the train, and changed your plan.”
“You asked for a clue and still solved the final step.”
This gives the child something repeatable. “You’re so smart” offers warmth, but little guidance for the next difficult morning.
Apollo 13’s filter procedure mattered because it turned a dangerous, unwieldy problem into actions the crew could perform with what they had. At breakfast, your job is to make the next action visible, then leave room for your child to take it.
Tomorrow morning, keep one sentence ready: “Show me where it stopped making sense.” Ask it, wait, and let the next move belong to them.
