Ofcom’s new finding that 91% of parents set gaming rules points to a larger question: what should those rules protect? They should protect children from ads, purchases, pressure and manipulative reasons to keep playing, while leaving room for games that make learning feel worth returning to.
In 1970, the Apollo 13 crew faced a problem no timer could solve. After an oxygen tank failed, carbon dioxide began building up inside the spacecraft. The available scrubber canisters did not fit the lunar module system the crew was using.
The mission’s outcome was still uncertain. Engineers at NASA worked out a way to connect the mismatched equipment with materials already aboard, including duct tape. The improvised solution helped the crew manage the rising carbon dioxide before Apollo 13 returned safely to Earth.
The account is documented in Lost Moon, written by Jim Lovell and Jeffrey Kluger. The important lesson is not that duct tape solves every problem. It is that the people responsible for the system changed the system around the danger. They did not tell the crew to try harder to breathe safely.
Children’s games deserve the same kind of practical thinking. Parents already set rules about when gaming can happen, where devices stay and how long a session lasts. A game should make those boundaries easier to keep.
That means removing the pressures that turn a short activity into an argument. There should be no advert that interrupts a child halfway through a task. No purchase prompt placed beside the next reward. No public chat that creates a new social obligation. No streak that makes stopping feel like losing something.
The rule should protect the child, not fight the game
A timer can limit minutes. It cannot remove the reasons a child feels compelled to continue.
A child may understand that bedtime has arrived and still resist closing an app if the game promises a chest, threatens a broken streak or places one more reward just out of reach. The parent then becomes the person who interrupts the fun. The game keeps the emotional advantage.

Good design removes pressure before parents need to intervene
A useful family rule might be, “You can play for a little while after your reading.” The game should support that rule with a clear beginning, a natural stopping point and no hidden commercial push.

Choose games that leave room for stopping
When families assess a children’s game, the obvious questions are useful: Is it age-appropriate? Does it teach anything? Is it safe?
Add a fourth question: what happens when my child needs to stop?
Look for games where progress is saved, sessions have a natural end and rewards do not depend on constant return. Check whether the child can play without seeing adverts or purchase offers. Ask whether the game gives parents useful information about progress, rather than only reporting minutes played.
A well-designed learning game can make a short session feel complete. A child might finish a fractions challenge, route a train through a logic problem or read a small story, then leave the growing world ready for another visit. Parents can say, “That’s enough for today,” without confiscating a promise the game made.
Apollo 13’s engineers did not protect the crew by adding another warning and hoping for better behaviour. They changed the conditions around the problem. Children’s games can do something similar for families: remove the commercial and psychological pressures that make stopping difficult.
The next time you set a gaming rule, inspect the game as well as the clock. The right question may be less “How do we make our child stop?” and more “What has this game put in the way of stopping?”
