A shared tablet can give each child a personal learning space when each profile keeps its own language, skill level, progress, and growing world. That means siblings can take turns without one child’s work overwriting the other’s starting point.
Saturday morning, one child opens a tablet at the kitchen table and finds a half-built clockwork isle waiting for them. Their last few maths challenges have already shaped what comes next. A shared machine can still feel personal
At MIT in 1961, Fernando Corbató and his colleagues were working on an experimental time-sharing system called CTSS. The underlying computer was one shared machine, yet the project aimed to let several people work through separate terminals as if each had access to their own computer. That idea matters far beyond a university computer room. A family tablet has the same practical constraint: one physical device, several people with different work to do.
For children, sharing a screen can easily become sharing the wrong context. A younger child may need spoken prompts and early counting. An older sibling may be ready for fractions, sentence building, or routing a train through a logic challenge. One may be learning in German, another in English. If the next activity is based on whoever played last, the handoff turns into setup work for the parent and friction for the child.

The return matters more than the handoff
A parent does not usually want to spend Saturday morning rebuilding settings. The better handoff is small: choose a child profile, see a familiar place, and continue.

A child can also test out of material through optional placement or skip-ahead checks. The point is not to preserve a rigid route. It is to preserve a meaningful one.
That distinction is especially helpful in homes where siblings differ in age or confidence. The younger child does not inherit a harder lesson because an older sibling went first. The older child does not have to replay material chosen for someone else.
Personalisation should not become pressure
A profile should remember progress without turning that memory into a countdown. Children can leave a session and return later without losing a streak, because there are no streak-loss penalties. There are no ads, loot boxes, public child profiles, chat, or in-app purchases competing for attention.
That calmer approach changes the family rhythm. The tablet can be passed across the table without a child being pulled into a reward loop designed for someone else. A few minutes of practice can be enough. The next return can begin with a welcoming moment rather than a warning about what was missed.

The useful lesson from CTSS is simple: shared hardware does not require shared identity. Corbató’s team built a system around separate access to a common resource. A family learning routine needs a child-sized version of the same respect.
On that Saturday morning, the tablet stays in one place. What changes is who is welcomed back. One child sees their familiar isle, their current challenge, and the work they already completed. Later, their sibling sees a different world that knows them too.
That recognition is a practical reason to return. It gives each child a place to pick up, play, and grow from exactly where they left off.
