A shared device should remember whose turn it is
Families often share a phone or tablet because it is the device already charged, already nearby, and easy to pass across the kitchen table. That practical choice should not force children into one generic learning track.
A younger child may need spoken instructions, large touch targets, and early number work. An older sibling may be ready for fractions, reading fluency, or a logic challenge that asks them to fix a sequence of instructions. Their progress should reflect the work they have actually done.

One machine, separate workspaces
At MIT in 1961, Fernando Corbató and his team were working on the Compatible Time-Sharing System, known as CTSS. The challenge was consequential: computers were expensive, and giving one person exclusive use at a time left others waiting. Time-sharing proposed a different arrangement, allowing multiple people to use one computer through separate sessions.
The outcome was far from obvious at the start. The system had to preserve each person’s work while sharing the same underlying machine. CTSS became an important early demonstration that a single computer could serve many people without turning their files and sessions into one muddle. Corbató later documented the work in his ACM Turing Award lecture, “The Computer Utility as a General Purpose System.”
A family tablet is a much smaller version of that problem. The hardware is shared, but the work should remain personal. Children do not need separate devices to have separate learning histories. They need a clear boundary between “my place” and “your place.”
That boundary matters emotionally as well as practically. A child who built part of a world yesterday wants to find it today. A child working through German sounds should not land halfway through an English sibling’s maths progress. Ownership gives a short session continuity.
Language belongs to the child, not the device
For a child learning to read, language settings are more than a menu preference. They shape the sounds they hear, the letter patterns they practise, and the words they are asked to build.

Each child profile can keep its own language, which means a family does not have to reset the whole tablet when siblings learn in different languages.

Progress should travel with the child
A useful shared-device setup protects three things: language, difficulty, and visible progress.
Language lets children hear and read material that fits their learning path. Adaptive challenges let one sibling begin with early counting while another works through arithmetic, fractions, or sentence-building. A persistent world gives each child a reason to return because the change they made remains visible.
CTSS showed that sharing a machine did not have to mean sharing one undifferentiated session. The same principle fits a rainy-day tablet handover. The device can sit in the middle of the room. Each child can still enter a place that remembers their work.
