A learning game earns its screen time when the child uses the skill to make something happen in the game. If maths appears only as a short gate before coins, costumes, or another unrelated round, the rewards are doing the real work.

At 6:18 on a rainy Thursday, Rosa is standing at the kitchen counter with a dish towel over one shoulder, watching her eight-year-old, Ben, tap through a maths app before dinner. He has missed two subtraction questions, but the app has already opened a spinning prize wheel. Ben leans closer. “I nearly got the dragon.”

Follow the action that changes the game

Open a learning game and ignore its labels for five minutes. Do not be persuaded by “educational,” a curriculum badge, or a parent dashboard. Watch the child’s actual action.

In a quiz app dressed as play, the learning task often sits in a separate layer. A child answers three questions, then receives a chest, a pet accessory, a race, or a burst of currency with no meaningful connection to the answer. The reward could stay exactly the same if the question changed from fractions to flags. That is the clue.

In an intrinsic learning game, the skill changes the visible situation. Counting may load a machine with the right number of parts. Check whether the reward creates pressure

Reward systems can make an app feel urgent without making it useful. Countdown timers, streak-loss warnings, loot boxes, and repeated prompts to return can pull a child back even when they are tired or confused.

A parent does not need to ban every reward to spot the difference. Ask what the reward asks the child to do next.

Does it invite another attempt at a skill? Does it mark a real milestone? Does it change a persistent place the child has built through learning? Or does it create fear of missing a random prize?

Rosa notices that Ben can describe the dragon’s rarity but cannot describe the subtraction method. That is enough information. A reward should help a child notice progress, not compete with the thing they came to learn.
