A learning game should keep a child’s attention on the challenge and the skill they are building, not on an unknown prize that appears after it. One simple test: cover the reward meter and ask what your child is trying to do next. If they cannot name the learning task or the change in their world, the reward may be doing the driving.
At 4:48 on a wet Thursday, Nina balanced a saucepan lid against her hip while her seven-year-old, Leo, sat at the kitchen table with a tablet propped beside a box of crayons. She had hoped for ten quiet minutes to finish dinner. Leo had been tapping quickly for several minutes, but when she asked what he was playing, he pointed past the number puzzle to a glowing bar at the top of the screen.
“I’m nearly there,” he said.
Nearly where?
The bar did not explain. It filled after each tap, flashed with a locked icon, then offered another little burst of suspense. Leo had stopped looking at the groups of objects he was meant to count. He was trying to make the meter move.
Nina could see the ending taking shape before the pasta water boiled: ten minutes of screen time gone, a child upset when the surprise did not arrive, and no clear sense of whether he had practised anything at all. The tablet had bought her quiet, perhaps, but it had also created one more negotiation at the table.
The reward can become the whole assignment
Children notice the most immediate signal on a screen. A mystery chest, spinning wheel, countdown, or filling meter gives them a clear short-term target: tap again and find out what happens.
That target can crowd out the reason the activity exists. A child who says, “I need three more coins,” may still be learning. A child who cannot say what the coins came from deserves a closer look.
The problem gets sharper when the reward is unpredictable. Uncertainty keeps attention hooked because the next tap might produce something exciting. For a rainy-day handoff, that can seem useful. The room is quiet. Dinner gets made. But the calm can turn brittle when the reward loop ends, resets, or asks the child to continue.

Try the cover-the-meter test
You do not need to inspect every app screen or become a learning-game critic between chopping vegetables. Use one small test after a few minutes of play.
Cover the points, coins, reward bar, or progress meter with your hand. Then ask: “What are you working on?”
Listen for an answer with substance:
- “I’m getting the train past the broken signal.”
- “I’m finding which groups make ten.”
- “I’m sounding out this word.”
- “I’m trying to make the circuit light.”
Those answers show that the child can see a meaningful goal. The game may still celebrate progress, but the challenge remains visible.
An answer such as “I need the purple box,” “I’m almost at the prize,” or “I don’t know, I just tap this” signals that the reward loop may be carrying more weight than the activity itself. It is a reason to sit beside them for one round and see what the app asks them to notice, decide, build, read, or solve.
This test also works when a child is delighted by a game. Delight is welcome. The useful question is where that delight points.
Give the learning a place in the play

That design choice matters in Nina’s kitchen. The next time Leo played, he was trying to route a train through a stalled section of track. When Nina asked what he was doing, he did not point to a meter. He moved his finger along the route and said, “This one goes wrong because it hits the wall.”
The saucepan was still bubbling. Dinner still needed attention. But Nina knew what he was thinking about.
Make ten minutes easy to explain afterward
A good tablet handoff gives a parent a sentence they can repeat back later: “You worked out which instruction fixed the train route.” “You practised making a whole from two parts.” “You read that sentence and chose what happened next.”
That sentence is a better measure than a pile of virtual prizes. It tells you what the child did, what they may try again tomorrow, and whether the app respects their attention.
When the rain keeps everyone inside, tablet time can be a small pocket of play. Choose experiences where the child’s next move has a purpose they can name. Then, when you lift the lid from dinner, you are more likely to hear about a problem they solved than a prize they almost won.
