Giving each child a persistent world turns progress into something personal: their choices, skills, and creations remain waiting for them. It also removes the tension of sharing one fragile family game state, where one child’s turn can overwrite another’s work.
In 1998, Pixar was making Toy Story 2 in Richmond, California, when files began disappearing from the studio’s system. A mistaken command had started deleting the film. The team stopped it, but restoring the project from backup exposed another problem: those backups were unreliable.
The outcome was still uncertain when the team learned that supervising technical director Galyn Susman had a separate copy at home, where she had been working while caring for her newborn. Her machine was taken back to Pixar, reportedly handled with extraordinary care, and its files helped recover the project. Parents still get the quieter evidence they need through real skill progress, session summaries, mastery badges, and weekly email digests. Create a separate profile for each child, choose the language and starting band that fit them, and let the first few sessions be short. Then watch what they return to: the next challenge, the unfinished structure, or the world that now feels unmistakably theirs.
