A wrong answer should trigger a smaller, more supported challenge, then return the child to the skill they were building. Showing the solution too soon can end the thinking that helps understanding take hold.
When the answer feels like a door closing
At 6:40 on a rainy Tuesday, eight-year-old Leo is curled beside the kitchen table with one sock half on, trying to route a train through Signal Works before school. He has sent the train into the same dead end twice. The red signal flashes, the little engine stops, and he presses his lips together.
A screen that immediately displays the correct route would settle the puzzle for him. It would also leave Leo with nothing to reconstruct. He could tap “next,” carry the feeling of having failed, and move on without knowing why the train could not reach the station.
That bad ending matters. If every hard moment becomes an answer reveal, the child can learn that persistence has no purpose. The game becomes a series of moments where someone else finishes the thought.

Progress is stronger when it survives a mistake

That approach also gives parents a more useful picture than a score alone. A wrong answer may show that a child needs a different entry point, more time with a skill, or a review before moving forward. It does not have to become evidence that they “cannot do” the subject.
The next time a child gets stuck, look for a learning experience that offers a smaller meaningful problem before it offers the answer. The best recovery can leave them with a thought they can carry into the next challenge: “I worked out what changed.”
