What Does Your Child Need to Do to Unlock the Next Room?

Before you grant ten more minutes, trace the next in-game change backward. If your child must read, calculate, test an idea, or fix a sequence to make it happen, the screen is asking them to practise a skill, not simply wait for a reward.

In April 1970, Apollo 13’s crew faced a growing carbon-dioxide problem after an oxygen tank explosion changed the mission. Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert, and Fred Haise had square lithium-hydroxide canisters in the command module, while the lunar module used round openings. NASA engineers in Houston had to devise an adapter from materials already available to the crew, with no guarantee it would work in time. NASA’s Apollo 13 history documents the improvised solution and the crew’s safe return.

The memorable part is the constraint. The next improvement in the spacecraft could not be unlocked by pressing a button repeatedly. Someone had to understand the pieces, reason through the mismatch, and make the available materials work together.

A child’s game carries lower stakes, of course. The same question can still help a parent judge those extra minutes.

Follow the change back to the child’s action

When a new room lights up, a train reaches its station, or a building gains another piece, pause for a moment and ask: what caused that change?

A useful answer names an action the child took:

  • They read the word and chose the matching sound.
  • They counted the objects before selecting a number.
  • They compared fractions and found the equivalent amount.
  • They tested a prediction in a science challenge.
  • They repaired a route by arranging instructions in the right order.

A less useful answer is “they played for long enough,” “they opened a chest,” or “the timer ended.” Those systems can keep attention without showing what a child has learned or worked out.

This test works even when you have never played the game yourself. Ask your child to show you the last thing that changed, then ask them to show you what they did to cause it. Their explanation tells you more than a screen-time label can.

If they say, “I had to make the train turn here,” or “I listened for the first sound,” you have a concrete starting point. If they cannot connect the change to an action, watch the next minute or two with them.

Look for effort before the reward

The point is not to demand that every moment feel like school. Children deserve play that feels like play. The question is whether the reward follows meaningful effort.

The world change matters because it gives the child a reason to care about the next challenge. The learning action matters because it gives the parent a reason to feel comfortable with the extra few minutes.

This is also why “educational” should mean more than a subject label. A multiplication screen can still reward quick taps. A reading app can still make the story wait behind a pile of unrelated tokens. Try the next-room test at home

You do not need a formal audit. Use one ordinary moment, perhaps when your child asks for one more turn before dinner.

First, ask them to point to the next change they want: a repaired bridge, a completed structure, a new room, a character’s response. Then work backward together. What must happen first? What will they need to notice, remember, read, count, or figure out?

Listen for a cause that belongs to the child. “I need to put the words in order.” “I have to choose which one sinks.” “I need to make the train reach home.” Those are small explanations, but they show agency and reasoning.

Then check the reward loop itself. Does the game add pressure through streak loss, countdowns, advertisements, or purchases? Or can the child stop after a natural completion point and return later without losing what they earned? Give ten minutes a job

The Apollo 13 adapter mattered because every material had a job in a real problem. A cardboard cover and tape were valuable because they helped solve the next constraint.

Use that same standard for the next room on a child’s screen. Let the visual payoff be warm and exciting. Let the child want to see the lamps glow or the building open. Then make sure the path there asks them to do something worth practising.

The next time they ask for ten more minutes, ask them to show you what unlocks the next room. You may get a much better answer than “because I want to keep playing.”
