The useful question is what a child does during screen time: predicts, decodes, routes, measures, reasons or builds. An hour spent making decisions and testing ideas asks more of a child than an hour spent tapping through rewards, even though both appear identical on a family screen-time report.
Imagine nine-year-old Mara at 6:42 on a rainy Tuesday evening. Her school bag is still beside the kitchen chair, and she is holding a tablet while her dad clears two cooling bowls of pasta. On screen, a small train has stopped one square short of its station.
Mara has already sent it the wrong way twice. One more failed route might end the session with the train stranded and the tablet pushed away. She studies the track, removes one instruction, then adds a repeat. The train turns, crosses the junction and reaches home.
Her dad sees eighteen minutes of screen time. Mara experienced a prediction, a failed hypothesis, a revision and a working program.
Replace minutes with verbs
Minutes matter. Bedtime still arrives, bodies still need movement, and a glowing screen can crowd out conversation or sleep. Yet duration alone tells parents very little about the quality of an activity.
Try describing the session with verbs.
Did the child watch, swipe and collect? Or did they compare two pitches, blend letter sounds, estimate a quantity, test whether an object would sink, route a train or build a circuit?
That language reveals the mental work hidden behind the glass. “She used the tablet for twenty minutes” describes the container. “She predicted which object would float, tested it and changed her answer” describes the learning.
The distinction also helps when an app wears educational clothing. A familiar character, a multiplication label or a row of cheerful badges can make almost any activity look useful. Watch the child’s actions instead. If success mainly depends on waiting, guessing or repeatedly tapping the brightest object, the educational theme may be doing more work than the mechanic.

Look for a visible chain of thought
Good educational screen time leaves clues. You may hear a child say, “That one is too heavy,” before testing a sinking prediction. You may see a finger trace sounds across a word. You may notice them undo a train instruction, compare two paths and try again.
The screen should give the child something meaningful to operate. A circuit changes when its parts change. A melody rises or falls. A fraction turns machinery only when the pieces represent the right quantity. These cause-and-effect relationships make thinking visible.
That visibility matters when a child gets something wrong. Mara’s first two routes did not merely produce red crosses. They showed her where the train stopped, giving her information for the next attempt. Failure stayed connected to the problem.
Parents can use the same lens without hovering over every tap. Sit nearby for one minute and ask:
- What are you trying to make happen?
- What did you change after that attempt?
- Can you show me why this answer works?
A child who can point to the track, word, rhythm or machine has something concrete to explain. If the only answer is “I need more coins,” the reward system may have displaced the learning goal.
Check what happens after success
The final seconds of an activity reveal what it values. Does success open another reward screen, demand a streak or push the child toward a purchase? Or does it show the consequence of the child’s thinking?

That still leaves room for an ordinary parental judgment. A useful activity can arrive at the wrong moment. A decoding challenge ten minutes before sleep may be more stimulating than a quiet book, and a frustrated child may need help stopping even when the task itself has value.
Ask one better question tonight
Later that evening, Mara returns to the kitchen to show her dad the route. She does not lead with the currency she earned. She points at the junction and explains why the repeat instruction had to come after the turn.
That explanation gives her dad something the device’s weekly total cannot: evidence of what happened inside those eighteen minutes.
The next time you check screen time, keep the number. Then add one verb beside it. Predicted. Decoded. Routed. Measured. Built.
