A 60-second tablet hand-back check can reveal more than whether your child stayed busy: ask them to recall one thing, explain one choice, and use the idea in a small new situation. Those three prompts give you evidence of recall, reasoning, and transfer after a Jambolino session, while keeping the conversation low-pressure.
In April 1970, the Apollo 13 crew faced a problem with rising carbon dioxide inside their lunar module. The command module carried square lithium hydroxide canisters, while the lunar module used round ones. Engineers in Houston had to work out whether the crew could adapt the square canisters using only materials already aboard. The solution worked, but it had to work in the spacecraft, with the crew following the steps, before anyone could rely on it.
That is the useful standard for a tablet hand-back. A child completing a screen activity is like a solution that looks fine on paper. The quick check is where you find out whether the idea can travel beyond the exact game screen.
James Lovell and Jeffrey Kluger document the Apollo 13 problem-solving effort in Lost Moon. The team did not need a long report from the crew. They needed evidence that the fix connected to the real conditions around it.
Start with one thing they remember
When your child hands back the tablet, ask: “What is one thing you had to remember to help your world today?”
Give them a few seconds. You are listening for a detail they can retrieve without the next question appearing on screen.
A child might say, “I had to count the treasures before I picked the number,” or, “I remembered that ‘sh’ makes one sound,” or, “The train needed the repeat tile.” Those are stronger answers than “I got lots right,” because they name the learning action.
Jambolino’s worlds are designed so the action inside the game is the skill itself. Counting helps repair an isle machine. Reading sounds helps a Wordwood place grow. A route has to make sense before a train can reach its destination. The building and currency give the effort a visible home, but they do not replace the practice.
If your child says, “I don’t know,” keep it easy. Point to one part of the session: “Was there a word, a number, or a train route you remember?” For pre-readers, let them show you with a gesture or repeat a sound they heard. Spoken instructions and large touch targets mean the conversation does not have to turn into a reading test.
This first question checks recall. It also tells your child that you care about what they were doing, not only how quietly they occupied the tablet.
Ask them to explain one choice
Next, try: “How did you know which one to choose?”
This is the reasoning check. It invites the child to describe the clue, pattern, count, sound, or rule that helped them decide.
You might hear, “Because there were six on this side and four on that side,” or, “I tried the sound at the beginning,” or, “That route would hit the wall.” A short answer counts. Children often understand more than they can explain in adult language, especially after concentrating.
Avoid turning this into a cross-examination. If they offer a vague answer, reflect a specific part back: “You noticed the groups were different sizes?” That gives them language for the thinking they already did. If they chose incorrectly and then fixed it, that is useful evidence too. Productive difficulty includes trying, noticing, and adjusting.

Change one small detail
The third question is the most revealing: “What would you do if I changed this part?”
Make the change tiny and concrete. If they counted objects, ask what happens if there are two more. If they routed a train, point to a different turn and ask where it would go. If they built a word, ask which sound they would listen for at the start of another word.
You are not looking for a perfect answer. You are checking whether the child can carry the idea into a nearby situation without the game supplying every cue.
That is transfer. It is the difference between recognising a familiar prompt and using an idea when the surface changes. A child who says, “Then I would count again,” has already moved beyond repeating a memorised answer. A child who says, “That would make it go the wrong way,” is applying the route rule rather than recalling a picture.
Keep the new example close to the one they played. A six-year-old who has been practising letter sounds does not need a surprise spelling quiz. An older child who worked on fractions does not need a worksheet on the kitchen table. One small variation is enough.
Make the hand-back part of the routine
The Apollo 13 adapter mattered because it worked under the conditions that mattered. Your child’s answer to these three questions is smaller evidence, but it serves the same purpose: it checks whether a screen activity held up when it left the screen.
Try the check once or twice a week, especially after a longer stretch of play or several short sessions together. Keep it to a minute. End with a specific observation: “You remembered the rule and used it on a new example.” Then let the tablet go away, or let your child get on with the next part of the day.
