When AI completes a child’s worksheet, the work may get faster while the learning disappears. The quickest check is simple: ask the child to explain the first step in their own words.
It is Tuesday, dinner is nearly ready, and a parent watches an AI tool turn a page of math problems into neat answers before the plates reach the table. The relief is real. No argument. No stalled evening. Then comes one small question: “How did you get the first one?” The child looks back at the screen.
There is no answer.
Fast answers can hide a missing skill
A finished worksheet can look like progress because it removes the visible problem. But the point of practice is the thinking that happens before an answer appears: noticing what the question asks, choosing a method, making a mistake, checking it, trying again.
That work can feel slow. It is also where a child builds recall and confidence.
For a child learning fractions, copying “3/4” does not show whether they can compare parts of a whole. For a child reading, receiving a polished sentence does not show whether they can blend sounds, recognize a word, or understand what they read. An answer can be correct while the learner remains stuck at the starting line.
The dinner-table explanation test is useful because it asks for evidence of understanding, not a performance of completion. Ask, “What did you notice first?” or “Can you show me a different way?” A child does not need polished language. The danger of trusting an instrument you cannot check

AI can be useful for a parent. It can suggest practice ideas, explain a concept in several ways, or help turn a confusing instruction into plain language. It becomes risky when it quietly replaces the child’s attempt and leaves adults with a clean page but no view of what the child can do alone.
Keep the child’s thinking visible
A better routine does not require banning every tool. It requires keeping the learning step in the child’s hands.
Start with the child’s own attempt. Give them a few minutes to choose an answer, read the problem aloud, move objects, sketch a model, or explain their guess. If they struggle, offer a prompt before offering the answer: “What do you already know?” “Which number is bigger?” “Can we break the word into sounds?”
Then use AI, a book, or an adult explanation as support. Ask the child to try again afterward. The second attempt is the useful signal. It shows whether help became understanding.
