In April 1970, Apollo 13’s crew faced rising carbon dioxide inside the spacecraft. The lunar module had become their lifeboat, but its round scrubber system could not accept the command module’s square lithium hydroxide canisters.
The crew had limited time, limited materials, and no room for a solution that merely looked plausible.
A small problem with a visible consequence
NASA’s account of Apollo 13 describes how Mission Control developed an adapter using materials available aboard the spacecraft. Astronauts Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert, and Fred Haise followed the transmitted instructions and assembled what they needed. The improvised system brought the carbon dioxide level under control.
This was one problem in a mission filled with them, but its structure is worth noticing. The task was specific. The available pieces were concrete. Each step mattered, and the result became visible in the spacecraft’s readings.
A five-minute learning session carries much smaller stakes, of course. The useful parallel is the shape of the challenge: give someone a clear problem, let them act on it, and show what their reasoning changed.
That is a better use of a short screen-time gap than opening something designed to stretch five minutes into forty.
What a child can finish before dinner
Picture the ordinary version. Dinner needs another few minutes. A parent has already heard “What can I do?” twice. There is no appetite for an account maze, an app-store detour, or a payment decision.

The Apollo 13 scrubber adapter did not solve the entire mission at once. It solved the urgent problem in front of the crew well enough for the next part of the work to continue. That is the lesson worth carrying into the five-minute gap. Do not demand a complete educational transformation from it. Choose one real challenge with a visible consequence.
