Children stay engaged longer when the challenge itself creates the tension, choice and payoff. A train that still needs a route can hold attention after a reward animation has already been forgotten.
At 4:17 on a rainy Saturday in Manchester, nine-year-old Milo had one sock on, a biscuit balanced beside the tablet and three signal tiles pointing the wrong way. A bright celebration had flashed across the screen moments earlier. He watched half of it, reached for the biscuit and looked toward the window.
Then the little engine stopped at a junction.
Its route ended one turn short of the station. If Milo sent it left, it would reach a blocked track. If he sent it right too soon, the program would repeat the wrong instruction and carry the engine away from home. He had already tried both.

If Milo knew the route at a glance, the train would become decoration. If every attempt produced another confusing failure, he would stop treating the problem as solvable. The useful space sits between those extremes.
