A reward wheel is doing too much when a child would stop caring the moment it vanished. Ask: if the wheel disappeared, would my child still want to solve, build, read, test, or figure out what comes next?
In 1973, Stanford University researchers Mark Lepper, David Greene, and Richard Nisbett studied what happened when preschool children who already liked drawing were offered a reward for it. One group expected a “Good Player” award for drawing with felt-tip markers. Later, during a free-choice period, the researchers watched to see who returned to the markers when no reward was on offer.
That was the real test. The activity had not changed. The markers were still there. The question was whether drawing had remained worth doing on its own.
Their study, published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, found that children who had expected the award spent less free-choice time drawing than children who received an unexpected award or no award. The research is often cited in conversations about “overjustification,” though the parent-sized lesson is simpler: a reward can become the reason an activity feels worth doing.
Look beneath the spinning wheel
A wheel, chest, countdown, streak, or daily prize can make an app feel busy. It can also hide a thin activity underneath.
Try the exit test with the specific moment your child is playing. If the wheel vanished, would there still be a problem they want to crack? Would they still want to see whether the train reaches the station, hear the rhythm correctly, finish decoding the word, or make the circuit light?
A child does not need to stay focused forever for the answer to count. Short sessions are normal, especially on a shared tablet between dinner and bedtime. The useful signal is what happens after the reward noise quiets. Do they talk about the puzzle? Try another route? Return to a challenge they nearly solved? Those are signs that the activity itself has given them something to hold onto.
A child who asks only when the next spin happens is telling you something useful too. That does not mean they have failed or that you chose badly. It means the reward loop may be carrying more of the experience than the learning activity.
Give the child a reason inside the activity
The strongest learning games put the child’s thinking at the center of what changes on screen.
In a route challenge, choosing the correct instruction can move a train through a rail yard. In a reading challenge, blending sounds can open the next part of a story. In a science activity, a prediction can determine what the child investigates next. The answer has a visible consequence because the answer operates the place.
That difference matters. A prize after a worksheet-shaped question says, “Finish this, then entertainment begins.” A responsive game world says, “Your idea made that happen.”

The question is not whether children enjoy rewards. Of course they do. The question is what remains when the reward fades from view.
Run a small home experiment
You can test an activity without making a speech about it. Turn off or skip the optional reward moment if the app allows it. Pause after a natural stopping point. Then notice what your child does next.
Do they ask to continue because a building is unfinished, a word is still tricky, or a route almost worked? Do they remember the problem later? Do they want to show a sibling what they made?
You can also ask a concrete question instead of “Did you learn anything?”
“Which part did you want to fix?”
“What were you trying to make happen?”
“Could you show me the hard bit?”
Those questions make room for effort, strategy, and curiosity. They also avoid turning every play session into a parent-administered test.

Choose rewards that point back to the work
Some rewards can support learning when they mark a meaningful accomplishment and bring attention back to what the child did. A new room that lights up after a difficult set of problems can make progress visible. A mastery badge can help a parent see a real skill taking shape.
The trouble starts when the reward interrupts the activity, demands repeated checking, or becomes the only reason to return. A spinning wheel asks the child to wait for chance. A well-made challenge asks them to think, try, notice, and try again.
Lepper, Greene, and Nisbett’s study did not prove that every reward harms every child or every activity. It does offer a durable caution from Stanford: when an external prize takes over the reason for doing something, interest can become fragile.
Before you hand over the tablet, look for the thing your child can care about after the wheel is gone. A bridge repaired, a story unlocked through real reading, a stubborn train route finally working. That is a reason to come back tomorrow.
