Learning games pass the Tunnel Test when a child wants to return to the problem after the rewards, notifications, and progress signals disappear. The revealing question is simple: do they ask what happens next in the world, or ask when they can collect the next reward?
The long silence before Apollo 13 came home
On April 17, 1970, Apollo 13 entered the expected radio blackout during re-entry to Earth. Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert, and Fred Haise could not communicate with Mission Control while their command module passed through the atmosphere.
The silence lasted longer than expected. At Mission Control in Houston, nobody could confirm that Odyssey had survived re-entry until the spacecraft finally re-established contact and splashed down in the Pacific Ocean.
NASA’s Apollo 13 Flight Journal documents the return as the final uncertain stretch of a mission already reshaped by an oxygen-tank explosion. The crew had spent days working through real constraints: conserving power, managing carbon dioxide, navigating, and preparing a damaged spacecraft for the trip home.
That is the useful part of the story for learning games. When the signal vanished, there was no confetti, score animation, or reassurance loop to carry the moment. The work itself had to hold together.
What disappears in a child’s tunnel test
A child’s version has much lower stakes, thankfully. The test can happen when Wi-Fi drops, when a parent says it is time to pause, or when an app removes the familiar churn of points, timers, streaks, and surprise prizes.
Listen to what the child says next.
“I need to get the train to the station” points to a goal they understand. “I was figuring out which word fits the story” points to attention on reading. “Can I try the circuit again?” suggests the experiment itself created a question worth resolving.
“I need my daily prize” tells you something different. It may mean the app has trained the child to protect a reward schedule more than to care about the task. That does not make the child foolish. It means the product’s strongest mechanic may be its pressure system.
The Tunnel Test does not require children to stay entertained without feedback. Good learning needs feedback. It asks what kind of feedback matters: evidence that their thinking changed something, or a signal that they have kept an external reward loop alive.
Build the consequence into the learning
In Jambolino, a correct response can light a machine, restore a room, or earn currency for a structure in the child’s own subject world. The consequence belongs to the skill. A child routes instructions because the railway needs a route. They decode a word because the reading scene needs the next piece of meaning. They predict a science outcome and then see the apparatus respond.
That connection makes a pause easier to understand. The child can leave with a meaningful unfinished thought: the bridge still needs a signal, the story still has a missing word, the circuit still has a fault to investigate.
The parent experience should make this visible too. A session summary and weekly digest can describe real progress rather than merely time spent or rewards gathered. Multiple child profiles matter here, because each child can have a different language, starting point, mastery state, and world that persists between sessions.
The same principle is why finished challenges can make screen time easier to end. A clear stopping point gives a child a completed piece of work to hold onto, rather than an interrupted reward chase.
Run the test without making play miserable
Try the Tunnel Test during ordinary use. Do not manufacture frustration by abruptly taking away a child’s access or hiding progress.
After a short session, ask them to tell you what they were trying to fix, build, read, predict, or solve. Then ask what they would do first when they return. Their answer will show whether the game gave them an intelligible goal.
Watch for a second signal: can the child explain a choice without repeating an answer by rote? A child who says, “I picked that route because the train would hit the blocked track,” has connected action to outcome. That is stronger evidence than a large pile of coins.
Apollo 13’s radio silence eventually ended because the crew and ground teams had done work that held beyond the moment of contact. A learning game earns repeat play in the same way: its child-facing world should still make sense when the reward machinery goes quiet.
