A child has probably mastered a skill when they can solve it correctly across several attempts, at an appropriate difficulty, after time has passed. Videos watched, activities completed, and points earned show participation; mastery requires evidence that the learning lasted.
In London in 1854, physician John Snow faced a similar measurement problem with far higher stakes. Cholera deaths were mounting around Soho, yet the accepted explanations failed to identify what people needed to avoid. Counting cases described the disaster. Snow needed evidence that could locate its cause.
The map that changed the question
Snow plotted cholera deaths around Broad Street and investigated where affected households obtained their water. The pattern concentrated attention on the public pump there.
The Broad Street pump handle was removed in September 1854. Snow’s work did not instantly settle the scientific argument, and historians caution against the tidy version in which one map single-handedly ended the outbreak. Still, his investigation helped establish the connection between contaminated water and cholera. The episode is documented in his 1855 book, On the Mode of Communication of Cholera.
The useful analogy lies in the shift from counting events to examining what they reveal.
A learning report can tell you that your child watched nine videos, finished twelve activities, or collected 300 points. Those numbers may be accurate. They still leave the important question open: what can your child now do without the lesson carrying them?
Imagine opening two progress reports after bedtime. One displays a bright trail of completed activities. Every tile is filled. The second lists a smaller number of skills and shows how your child performed when questions became harder, when a familiar idea returned later, and when help was reduced.
The first report records movement through content. The second offers evidence about learning.
Completion, performance, and mastery measure different things
Completion answers, “Did my child reach the end?”
That can matter. Finishing a lesson may show attention, persistence, or simple exposure to a new idea. A completed activity also gives parents a useful starting point for conversation.
Performance answers, “Did my child answer correctly during this activity?”
This is stronger evidence, but context matters. A child might remember the example shown seconds earlier, follow a repeated pattern, guess from limited choices, or succeed because the task stayed easy. One perfect round can be encouraging without proving durable understanding.
Mastery asks more of the evidence. Can the child succeed repeatedly? Can they handle a different version of the same idea? Can they return to it later? Does the difficulty rise as their answers improve? If they struggle, does the next task reveal the missing step?
That distinction matters in everything from blending letter sounds to comparing fractions. A child who has watched a phonics video has encountered blending. A child who can blend unfamiliar decodable words has demonstrated the skill. A child who can still do it after a gap provides stronger evidence again.
This is also why the activity itself matters. What did the screen ask your child to do? is often more revealing than how long the screen held their attention.
What a useful progress report should reveal
Start by looking for named skills rather than broad subject labels. “Mathematics” tells you very little. “Adds within 20,” “compares fractions,” or “identifies a word’s initial sound” gives you something you can recognize outside the app.
Next, check whether the report separates attempts from success. Ten completed questions could mean ten confident answers, repeated guessing, or substantial help. Those experiences should not produce the same conclusion.
Look for evidence across time. A skill that reappears after other material tests whether it remained available instead of fading when the activity ended.
Difficulty should also respond to the child. If every question stays at the same level, a high score may show that the work was too easy. Productive difficulty gives a clearer signal: the child succeeds often enough to stay engaged while still meeting problems that require thought.

A five-minute check parents can use
Choose one skill marked complete and ask your child to show it in a fresh setting. Keep the moment calm and short.
For arithmetic, change the numbers while preserving the underlying idea. For reading, offer a new word built from familiar sounds. For logic, ask the child to predict where a short sequence of instructions will finish. Avoid copying the exact activity, since recognition can masquerade as understanding.
Then ask, “How did you work that out?” You do not need a polished explanation. Listen for a usable strategy: counting on, splitting a word into sounds, comparing denominators, or tracing instructions in order.
Try the skill again another day. That delayed check is the household version of Snow’s map: it replaces an easy total with evidence tied to the question you actually care about.
A completed activity can still deserve celebration. So can the effort behind a difficult attempt. But when you open the next progress report after bedtime, look past the glowing tiles and find the learning signal underneath: a named skill, demonstrated more than once, at changing difficulty, and remembered later.
