A tablet history audit can reveal the difference between time spent inside an educational app and time spent actually practising a skill. Look for what your child had to think about, how often learning changed the game, and whether the session produced progress you can verify.
Imagine Priya at 9:47 PM, standing in her darkened kitchen with one sock still on and a mug of tea gone cold. Her eight-year-old, Ravi, had asked for twenty minutes of “math time” before bed. The tablet history showed twenty-two minutes in the app.
Then Priya looked closer.
Most of the session had gone into choosing outfits, collecting daily prizes, watching character animations and tapping through menus. Ravi had answered four arithmetic questions. One wrong answer had triggered a hint. The rest of the app barely asked him to think.

Count decisions, not minutes
“Twenty minutes of educational screen time” sounds measurable. It rarely tells you what happened.
A better audit starts with the child’s decisions. What did Ravi need to notice, remember, calculate, decode, predict or correct? Did his choices affect what happened next? Could he advance by tapping quickly, waiting through animations or guessing until something worked?
A busy screen can conceal a thin learning loop. Coins fly, mascots cheer and meters fill, yet the child may spend only a small part of the session working with the subject.
This does not mean every second needs to resemble a lesson. Children need room to explore and enjoy what they build. The useful distinction is whether play grows from learning or regularly interrupts it.

- Did the child earn it by demonstrating a skill?
- Could the same reward appear without learning?
- Does a wrong answer help the child recover and try again?
- Does progress represent mastery, or simply time spent in the app?
