A useful learning game gives your child something meaningful to explain when the tablet comes back: the route they repaired, the pattern they discovered, or the reason their first attempt failed. If the clearest memory is a prize, badge, or pile of coins, the reward system may be doing more work than the learning.
Imagine nine-year-old Luca at the kitchen table in Bristol, still wearing one muddy football sock. His train has stopped between two signals because the instructions send it left too early. He tries the same route twice, faster each time, while his dad waits to start dinner.
One attempt remains before Luca must hand back the tablet. If the train stays stuck, he loses the chance to repair the station that evening.

Listen for the part your child remembers
Children naturally talk about what held their attention. Their explanation offers a small window into what the game asked their mind to do.
A child might describe collecting gems, opening a chest, or keeping a streak alive. Those details reveal a reward loop. The learning may still have happened, but you need another question to find it.
A child who says, “The heavy one sank, but the wide one floated,” is already replaying an observation. “I made ten in two different ways” points to number sense. “The train hit the wall until I changed the instructions” contains prediction, failure, and revision.
You are listening for thought in motion.
The answer does not need to sound polished. A shrug followed by “I moved that bit because it was wrong” can tell you more than a screen full of stars. Ask one gentle follow-up: “What made you try that?” Then leave enough silence for the child to reconstruct the moment.
Check what makes the game move
Some learning games place questions between stretches of play. Answer a sum, receive a token, then return to the part the child actually wants. This structure can produce correct answers, yet it teaches the child that learning is the toll booth.
A stronger design makes the skill operate the world. Fractions balance a mechanism. Letter sounds assemble a word. A sequence of instructions routes a train. A science prediction changes what happens in the experiment.
This distinction matters because children remember causes. When their reasoning moves the machine, repairs the route, or completes the melody, the concept becomes part of the event they want to describe.

Notice what happens after a mistake
Luca’s first two attempts mattered because the game kept the failed route visible. He could see where the train turned too soon, change the instruction order, and try again. The mistake supplied information.
That gives parents another useful signal. Ask, “What went wrong before you fixed it?”
Listen for a specific account: “I counted one twice,” “the smaller fraction looked bigger,” or “the wire did not reach the bulb.” These answers show that the child could inspect the result and revise a choice.

Run the test before choosing the next game
You do not need a curriculum spreadsheet or a long session beside your child. Give a game a few minutes, then ask three concrete prompts:
- What were you trying to make happen?
- Where did it go wrong?
- What did you change?
A promising game gives children visible material for all three answers. Younger children may point, act out the movement, or repeat a sound instead of explaining it in full sentences. That still counts. The goal is evidence that their attention stayed with the learning action.
Also check the surrounding pressure. Ads, countdowns, loot boxes, and streak-loss warnings compete with the actual task.
