The Five Silent Minutes That Reveal What a Learning Game Is Really Training

A five-minute tablet handover can reveal what a learning game is training your child to do. Stay silent and watch: do they hunt for prizes, or pause, predict what the train will do, and revise their plan?

In Berlin in the early 1900s, a horse named Clever Hans appeared to solve arithmetic problems by tapping his hoof. His owner, Wilhelm von Osten, asked questions; Hans tapped out answers. The performance looked convincing until psychologist Oskar Pfungst changed what the horse could see.

What Clever Hans was actually watching

Pfungst tested Hans under different conditions in 1907. The horse performed well when the questioner knew the answer and remained visible. When the questioner did not know the answer, or Hans could not see the person, his accuracy fell.

Hans had learned something, but it was not arithmetic. He was detecting tiny, unintentional changes in posture and expression. The person relaxed when the hoof taps reached the expected number, giving Hans a signal to stop.

Pfungst documented the investigation in his book Clever Hans (The Horse of Mr. von Osten). The episode became a lasting warning for researchers: observers can accidentally tell a subject what response they expect.

Parents face a smaller version of this problem at the kitchen table. We point toward the next button. We repeat an instruction with extra emphasis. We say “look carefully” as our eyes settle on the right answer. Then we mistake successful prompting for independent understanding.

Silence removes those clues.

Run the five-minute test

Choose a calm moment, hand over the tablet, and say only that your child can play for five minutes. Then stop coaching. Resist the urge to explain the screen, fix a mistake, or praise every tap.

Watch what happens before and after an answer.

Does your child study the railway map before moving a train? Do they trace the route with a finger? When a program fails, do they inspect the instructions and change one step? Those actions show reasoning taking place inside the play.

Now watch for a different pattern. Does your child scan the edges of the screen for a gift icon? Do they tap rapidly until something flashes? Do they dismiss the learning activity as quickly as possible to reach coins, badges, or a prize screen?

The distinction matters because children get good at whatever a game repeatedly asks them to practise. A game can train route planning and prediction. It can also train reward hunting.

Keep your own reactions out of the experiment. Pfungst learned that even a knowledgeable observer could influence Hans without meaning to. Your raised eyebrow, pointing finger, or quick “try again” can hide friction that your child would encounter alone.

Look for the thought that moves the game

A strong learning mechanic makes the child’s idea produce the visible result. In Jambolino’s Signal Works, children route trains, predict programs, repair instructions, use repeats, and reason about branches. The train’s movement follows the program they chose.

That creates useful evidence for a parent. A child pauses because the route needs thought. They test an instruction because its effect matters. A failed attempt gives them something specific to reconsider.

Rewards are not automatically harmful. A growing world can give effort a visible consequence. In Jambolino, solving real learning challenges earns world-specific currency for building and upgrading structures. Completed buildings remain explorable, so the world keeps meaning after construction.

The key question is what earns that change. The child should reason about the train, decode the word, balance the circuit, or solve the quantity. The learning action powers the world.

What to notice when the five minutes end

Do not score the session by the number of correct answers. Productive difficulty includes mistakes. Instead, look for three quieter signs.

First, can your child explain what they were trying to make happen? “I wanted the train to turn before the wall” tells you more than a badge count.

Second, do they change their approach after failure? Random tapping repeats. Reasoning adjusts.

Third, what do they ask for afterward? “Can I get another chest?” points toward the reward layer. “Can I fix that track?” points toward an unfinished idea.
